Food = Fuel

If you’ve followed me for a while you know I’ve battled with eating disorders for the last 11 years. You can read my post detailing my eating disorder struggles here.

Overcoming eating disorders is really hard, and while I thought I’d gotten so much better, I realized I still have a long way to go. After having several training runs where I felt completely lethargic and depleted I started really analyzing my eating habit.
I’ve been tracking everything I eat for a little over a month. This was something I was really reluctant to do because the last time I tracked my food my goal was to try to burn more calories than I consumed.

I discovered most days I was eating about 1000 fewer calories a day than I needed, other days I could be under by 1500 calories.

I had a really bad habit of not eating after running and instead taking naps and not eating until 9 AM or later, and I was running at 5 AM on these days, some days I would skip breakfast completely. This wasn’t intentional, I just simply forgot.

I’ve tried to eat more calories each day and have felt a million times better during training runs and I’ve started gaining more muscle. I had to put alerts on my phone to remind me to eat, because it’s really easy for me to ignore my hunger.

I am getting ready for my 5th marathon in a couple days and I am eating like a bear about to go into hibernation.

I am so excited to see what happens at the Jack and Jill Marathon after a month of proper fueling. I am so thankful for my Wahoo Running buddies for pushing me to take a closer look at my nutrition needs.
